Baka ANBU Rookies...
I never really liked surveillance duty while I was in ANBU. And now I finally know why.

Watching over the Konoha parent-sensei conferences was a far cry from, say, infiltrating an enemy stronghold. At least his objectives for the latter were concise and predictable: disarm any sentries, free hostages, gather damning evidence, burn the fort down on his way out… Konoha, however, was hardly predictable. And it didn't help that the sole ANBU on duty for the evening was also rather… difficult. He's definitely a new recruit-- at least, recent enough that -I- cannot place his voice nor his mannerisms. And apparently, raw enough to believe this is not a serious assignment.

The unfamiliar ANBU followed orders respectably enough, but Kakashi could tell that he thought such mundane tasks were below his station. I seriously doubt that you've been outside of the country yet, rookie. Sandaime certainly wouldn't have made such a poor lapse in judgment. Which doesn't hold well for me at all. So, he was stuck with the arrogant and cocky shinobi, who paid less-than-full attention to his duties as the night wore on. And paid scant heed to Kakashi's warnings, as the jounin appeared to be less imposing and accomplished than the tales claimed. The more fool, he. But it wasn't the first time that Kakashi had been underestimated, due to his own efforts of disguising his actual abilities.

Still, it irked him that this snot-nosed youngster was beginning to take on a condescending air when they reconvened.

It couldn't be helped. Konoha was a bustling, large town; split between two shinobi, Kakashi could only cover certain key points on his rounds. He could only hope that the ANBU member was covering -his- side adequately. Lost in his own reservations, Kakashi swiftly arrived at the Academy once again, intent on checking the status of the conferences and hoping for their quick and quiet conclusion.

[Location: Academy near the end of the conference]
*closes and locks Hyuuga Hanabi's scroll* Well, that was considerably less painful than I thought it would be.

*notices Kakashi by the entrance* Ah, Kakashi-sensei. What have you heard from our ANBU agent?

Re: [Location: Academy near the end of the conference]
Yo, Iruka-sensei. Hai hai, he's been checking in with me regularly. ^.\ And finally started whining about how boring his rounds were... sigh. I am not a babysitter; that is Iruka-sensei's job. Is that the last of your interviews? They went well, I take it?

Re: [Location: Academy near the end of the conference]
*shakes the scroll in his hand* Last one right here. I think most of the parents are too tired now to raise much objection. I expected worse from the Hyuuga clan to be honest. I suppose it's a good thing they were so late in the evening. *grins*

Re: [Location: Academy near the end of the conference]
The Hyuugas? Ah... yes I recall last year's number one rookie, Hyuuga Neiji, having a younger sibling. Is she showing progress in her studies? ^.\ That would be unlikely... two geniuses in one generation? But it may be more the Hyuuga mentality than anything else... 'It is your destiny to become a genius' indeed.

Re: [Location: Academy near the end of the conference]
*scratches the back of his head* Well, I don't believe Hanabi will stack up to Neji's past. Certainly a powerful child, however. Arrogant too, damn it all. *closes his eyes and pinches the bridge of his nose* Honestly, I'll be glad when Hanabit graduates to genin, poor as that sounds.

Re: [Location: Academy near the end of the conference]
*ears perk* Not one of his favoured students, it seems... And why is that, Iruka-sensei? Too much for you to handle? ^.\

Re: [Location: Academy near the end of the conference]
*opens one eye* Combine Hanabi and Konohomaru and his little crew and you might just understand why I continually get headaches. *his words bounce back to him* Gah. That's horrible of an instructor to say. *sighs* I'm just tired I suppose. They're good, energetic children in the end.

Re: [Location: Academy near the end of the conference]
-Hanabi-? And here I thought she was a carbon copy of Hinata. Heh, I don't blame you at all. The most patient of instructors will frequently find their charges... exasperating, to say the least. ^.\ It doesn't matter whether you're dealing with genin, or even ANBU members. Much to my dismay...

Re: [Location: Academy near the end of the conference]
Heh. That's one way of putting it, I suppose. You mentioned ANBU. Any trouble with our agent? *smiles faintly*
Hatake Kakashiecchi_copynin on September 5th, 2005 08:09 am (UTC)
Re: [Location: Academy near the end of the conference]
Heh, was my exasperation so apparent, Iruka-sensei? Perhaps you're getting to know me too well. And to answer your question... maa, I simply do not believe -one- ANBU member is enough to be accountable for this whole event.
chuunin_iruka on September 5th, 2005 08:13 am (UTC)
Re: [Location: Academy near the end of the conference]
Well, I think it's more a recognition of the expression in a fellow instructor. *chuckles but sobers quickly* No, I don't suppose one would be enough. Did either of you notice anything strange? Too many important people are here tonight. I've already spoken to the Hokage tonight and he looked as preoccupied as Kakashi seems at the moment. There's something in the air and I don't like it.

Re: [Location: Academy near the end of the conference]
Your organization is certainly most efficient, and the genin teams have overcome their obstacles without fail. But... Should I be telling him all of this? Iruka-sensei does have a level head on his shoulders, and he -is- in charge, so I guess he has a right to know. *shrugs helplessly* Nothing that can be phrased in words, Iruka-sensei.
chuunin_iruka on September 5th, 2005 08:22 am (UTC)
Re: [Location: Academy near the end of the conference]
*sighs* That's what I was afraid of. I can't help but feel something is going to happen. I was hoping it was my own nervousness at heading up the conference. *chuckles weakly* Perhaps that's all it really is, though. Prior years have been fine. This one should be no different. I wish I could lie better than that. *avoids Kakashi's eye* With as chaotic as it is here, it's the perfect time to do something.
Hatake Kakashiecchi_copynin on September 5th, 2005 08:30 am (UTC)
Re: [Location: Academy near the end of the conference]
It's unusual that a chuunin would be so observant, especially since he should be fully absorbed in managing the conference. Hn, special sensitivity, I guess? You know as well as I that wistful thinking will not be enough to defend this village, if something were to happen tonight. *in a sterner tone than he intended*
chuunin_iruka on September 5th, 2005 08:42 am (UTC)
Re: [Location: Academy near the end of the conference]
*turns back to Kakashi quickly and frowns at the jounin's tone* No...I don't suppose it would. But then I suppose I'm more complacent for being merely chuunin. Gods, I'm too tired to be doing this right now. He has a point but...there's no need to be so sharp about it.
Hatake Kakashiecchi_copynin on September 5th, 2005 08:47 am (UTC)
Re: [Location: Academy near the end of the conference]
*rubs his brow wearily* Have I ever implied that, Iruka-sensei? Please do not insult me, as I have said often enough that rank does not matter. Everything does not revolve around you. I have enough matters to worry about tonight than to take on one irate instructor. *sighs and turns to leave*

Re: [Location: Academy near the end of the conference]
*reddens at the reprimand* I...uh... *reaches out and grabs Kakashi's arm* Forgive me. I spoke hastily. *keeps his eyes lowered* You've never said anything of the kind so I apologize. *bows*

Re: [Location: Academy near the end of the conference]
*tenses at the contact, but then forces himself to relax* Surprising... he isn't as stubborn as I thought he was. Act jovial. Jovial. Hai hai, Iruka-sensei. I know you have been under a lot of stress lately, so it's understandable. *smoothly retracts his arm*

Besides, I should apologize also, perhaps I am only creating enemies where there are none. ^.\ *bows also*

Re: [Location: Academy near the end of the conference]
Understandable or not, it was uncalled for. *sighs and waves a hand* No matter. I'm grateful you're this observant, Kakashi-sensei. It's good to know I can count on you for something like this.

Maybe. But if you believe something may happen, is there any way to call on more ANBU? Or are we truly left with just the one agent? I never considered asking the Hokage. Perhaps I should have.
Hatake Kakashiecchi_copynin on September 5th, 2005 09:03 am (UTC)
Re: [Location: Academy near the end of the conference]
*chuckles* I try my best, Iruka-sensei. But I can hardly be in different places at once. Well I suppose I could, but then I wouldn't be too effective if something -were- to happen.

Perhaps. But it would take time, and shinobi strikes are often a matter of speed and ferocity. If it -does- come to the worse, Iruka-sensei, then our primary defense would be from those already within the village.

Re: [Location: Academy near the end of the conference]
*grins faintly* Do you know I actually considered using a clone tonight for my more...insistent parents? *chuckles* I would have drained my chakra though considering the vast number that match that description.

*taps his chin with the scroll in his hand* I suppose we'll have to make do then. Perhaps next year we'll have better support. I can't even begin to think of who would be bold enough to infiltrate Konoha now. Which only shows how few missions I've been on lately. I should talk with Genma after all this and fill myself in.
Hatake Kakashiecchi_copynin on September 5th, 2005 09:22 am (UTC)
Re: [Location: Academy near the end of the conference]
*relaxes slightly* Heh, but you're meeting with powerful shinobi parents, Iruka-sensei. I have no doubt that they would have seen through the deception... and few of the heads would be appreciative of your sort of humour. ^.\

*quells the urge to roll his eye in exasperation* What do you think our enemies would do? Parade around their borders gaily, demonstrating their intent and ability to invade Konoha? If that is the general thinking going around the village, then we are in deep trouble. Sandaime... -what- are you thinking? *but simply nods agreeably* Maa, I suppose you're right. ^.\ Please indicate in your report that more of an ANBU presence is needed; perhaps the Hokage will take heed if there is more than one complaint. Imagine that, he won't listen to me, but he may just listen to -him-...
chuunin_iruka on September 5th, 2005 03:21 pm (UTC)
Re: [Location: Academy near the end of the conference]
True enough. They're on edge enough tonight; I doubt Sandaime-sama would appeciate further frustrating them. *grins*

I should think more on this. I know we had a run-in with the Stone not too long ago. But would they come at Konoha this quickly? And then there's the Sound. Either one of them are understandable. But I don't know enough about their movements at the moment. Just guessing, really. *nods* I'm to give him a summary report once the conference is over. I'll be sure to indicate that we need further ANBU assistance next year. If you can think of anything else he should know, I'll include it.

Re: [Location: Academy near the end of the conference]
*nods* Thank you, Iruka-sensei, that would be best. How have the genin teams been performing so far? ^.\ Especially the specific one that I have in mind...

Re: [Location: Academy near the end of the conference]
Ah, the teams. Well, nothing too difficult for them to handle. Sasuke-kun and TenTen-chan have been keeping the children occupied. Chouji-kun and Ino-chan have been doing the best they can considering how insistent the parents can be. And Sakura-chan and Kabuto-kun have been quite helpful with keeping my data scrolls categorized. I think they had a bit of trouble earlier with scrolls, though. Konohomaru managed to foul things up a bit. *chuckles*

[OOC: I wasn't sure if I needed to address the "problems" in this or not.]

Re: [Location: Academy near the end of the conference]
I dropped in on Sasuke and Tenten earlier; apparently they are working on their charges'... hrn, survival skills, too put it mildly. Honestly, I do not know why you assigned those two to occupy the children. ^.\ They certainly do not seem to have had childhoods of their own... judging by how serious they are.

Konohamaru? I thought you stationed Shiranui-san to keep an eye on the files...?

Re: [Location: Academy near the end of the conference]
Ah, good. Thank you for doing that. Oh, and I forgot to mention that Naruto and Shikamaru-kun handled the dignitaries far better than I had expected. Not to say they didn't have trouble but at least Naruto controlled himself. *grins*

Well, I did but when Konohomaru is on one of his "missions" it's hard enough for me to handle him. Ebisu-san collected the boy shortly after that. *chuckles* But as I said, Kabuto-kun and Sakura-chan handled things well enough.

Re: [Location: Academy near the end of the conference]
Naruto the diplomat... that almost sounds like a contradiction.

Heh. Sandaime needs to consider putting a body-bind no jutsu on that kid... but I am glad everything worked out for you. I am curious, Iruka-sensei, how did you manage to recruit Kabuto into helping? He was not a student -you- graduated, ne?
chuunin_iruka on September 6th, 2005 02:47 am (UTC)
Re: [Location: Academy near the end of the conference]
Kabuto-kun? No, I didn't graduate him myself. But he was quite helpful to me the other day. His jounin sensei was out of the village at the time so I asked him directly if he would help. He seemed more than willing.
